  • A sheet pan
  • A sharp knife
  • 1 lb. of asparagus spears
  • 1 tsp. of salt
  • 1/2 tsp. of pepper
  • 4 tbsp. of olive oil
  • 1 lemon
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • Some parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese

How to Make Grilled Asparagus in Foil

Step 1: Prepare Asparagus and Other Ingredients

The first step is to obviously prepare the main attraction, your asparagus! This is pretty simple so prep time won't take more than 10 minutes.

Trim Asparagus

With your sharp knife, cut your asparagus into spears of equal length. Here are some tips to properly cut your asparagus stalks:

Trim Asparagus
  • The bottom of your asparagus stalks, which are thicker, are normally woody and not great to eat. Cut them off.
  • To find out where it's best to trim asparagus, gently bend a stalk. The point where your asparagus stalk snaps are where the woody part ends. That's the ideal point of cutting!

Wash Asparagus

This part of prepping your asparagus is obvious. Rinse them with cold water and make sure the dirt is off the stalks and tips! Dry them off after.

Other Ingredients

Prepping the other goodies for this recipe is also straightforward. Just note the following:

  • Take your 4 garlic cloves and mince them.
  • Cut your lemon into wedges.
  • As for the cheese, grate it.

Step 2: Combine Ingredients

With everything ready, it’s now time to show you how to grill asparagus in foil with the ingredients. Combine your ingredients and place your asparagus on the sheet pan you prepared.

Combine Ingredients

Sprinkle the olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper onto your asparagus. Toss it all together and you're good to go!

Tip: Adding more salt and pepper wouldn't hurt. It's all up to your taste buds!

Step 3: Wrap Asparagus in Foil Packets

This won't be a grilled asparagus in foil recipe without the foil, so here we are. Cut out four large squares of aluminum foil.

Divide your tossed asparagus into four equal portions and we'll be placing them in foil packets. Once that's done, it's grilling time!

Step 4: Preheat Your Grill

You need to preheat your grill first. Make sure to preheat it to medium-high heat!

Preheat Your Grill

You'll want a hot grill, so sprinkle a few drops of water on your grill grates to check if it's hot enough. If the water sizzles and evaporates quickly, you're good to go!

Step 5: Cook Asparagus

Place your foil packs of asparagus on the grill. Cook them for roughly 10 minutes.

It usually takes 10 minutes, but here are some tips on grilling time just to make sure:

  • Your asparagus cooking time depends on how thick the stalks are. Thick asparagus stalks mean a longer cooking time, grilling thin stalks is faster.
  • If you prefer tender asparagus, grilling them takes longer.

Step 6: Garnish and Serve

Once done, take each foil packet off the grill. You can place them on a serving dish if you want.

Open each foil packet and sprinkle your grated cheese on top while it's still hot!

Garnish and Serve

DON'T FORGET the lemon wedges. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice on top for added acidity. You can even grate some lemon zest on it if you wish!
